Modern Organic

The Modern Organic concept board mixes organic textured accent tiles with sleek and modern porcelain.  Starting at the top, the Olive Buffalo leather tile is made of recycled leather scraps and uses natural materials like Acacia Wood Bark and rubber to mix the materials together creating a beautiful and “green” leather tile.  These tiles can be used on the wall or floor and they come with a sticky backing making them amazingly easy to install.  Just remember to open the boxes when you receive the tiles and let the leather acclimate to the local climate for at least 24 hours.  Read more about the leather tiles here.

The next material, Standing River Rock has major sculptural appeal.  The Standing Pebble Tiles are the regular pebble tiles cut in half and mounted on the cut edge to create a 3 dimensional look.  Each tile is 4″x12″ which means you need 3 to make a square foot.  These tiles are extremely popular in commercial installations but also look great in small showers or fireplaces.

Lastly is the Ferroker Alumino porcelain.  This tile completes the look by providing a sleek flooring.  But it keeps the organic feel with an oxidized finish.  This tile can be used on the floor or the wall.  To create a seamless flooring use the smallest grout line possible with Oyster Grey grout color from Custom Building Product, it matches perfectly!  It is modern, sleek, and will have everyone clamoring over your design.

A few of my favorite things…

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

You have probably heard us say a million times before that concept boards are a perfect way to get ideas for your projects.  They really are great guidelines for your remodel but are in no way the only way to combine products together.  Put something in, take something out, you might actually end nowhere near where you started!  But exactly where you want to be.  Here are a couple of my favorite boards here at Design For Less and an alternate I might use.

Cool Neutral Concept Board

Cool Neutral Concept Board

I love the simple cool neutral colors of this concept board.  It is not just one of my favorites it is my favorite.  The shades of black, grey, and touches of white create an elegant and sophisticated look.   And to top it off is the combination of unique textures which elevates the visual interest.  There are the rough angular shapes of the rocks, the luxurious and organic feeling of the leather, and the smooth and soft porcelain.

If I was using this in a kitchen I would do the Cement Black Porcelain on the floor, Grey Marble for the backsplash, and the Leather on a feature wall.  If I was looking for a little more color/pop but still in the cool neutrals, I might use a glass tile like Ocean Grey 1×2 for the backsplash.

Leather and Stainless Steel Concept Board

Leather and Stainless Steel Concept Board

While I love cool neutrals I also love contrast.  My favorite part about this concept board is the leather tile next to the Stainless Steel.  Both relatively new materials for tile they look amazing together.  Not to mention they are both manufactured using recycled materials (see our post on eco-friendly tiles here).  The contrast of the metal next to smooth leather is unbelievable.  And the travertine is the perfect complement in this arrangement to add just the right amount of comfort and warmth to the pallet.

If I was going to use this for a kitchen I would use pretty much the same layout as the other board.  Stainless Steel for the backsplash, travertine on the floor, and leather as a feature wall probably opposite the kitchen.  But on this one I would run a border of the Stainless Steel through the middle of the leather wall to bring it all together.  If I wanted to stay more modern I might change the travertine to Block Wenge Porcelain.  A little darker but has a great contrast with the tan leather.

The options are endless and sometimes all you need is start.

Pebble Tile Concept Boards

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Perhaps the biggest stumbling block for the burgeoning designer is picking out various products or finishes.  Beyond trying to figure out colors that go well together is the challenge of pairing tiles with cabinetry, counter tops and flooring. The hard part is not just in the pairing, it is also in the picking from so many different sources.  Sure you may get sample X to go with paint swatch B but only to find that neither really goes with your existing counter top or cabinets. So its back for more swatches and back to the tile store to see if you can get it sorted and on it goes until you hopefully get it right.

Color Swatches

It would be great to say there is an easy fix to this conundrum but truthfully it is more an exercise in patience and persistency which is easier said than done. And that is not said lightly because on too many occasions we receive installations photos from homeowners beaming with pride at their accomplishments, made with the absolute best of intents, but sadly their efforts missed the mark. Considering people’s homes are by far their biggest investment, there is no room to miss the mark or time to be quick and loose with our decisions.

Bottom line is that if you do some interior designing or remodeling to your home, it is best to get it right or put the idea on the shelf till your ready to commit with the proper time and resources. The end result, if it is done right, is an emotionally jubilant you as you come through the door and “ohs and ahs” from guest at your stunning place.  If you are putting your house or condo on the market, then that glowing emotional connection to your design is the difference from sold to the never ending listing.

All that being said, we have several valuable resources to help us, help you, help yourself. The first is concept boards which pair a variety of materials together and help your decision making process go a little more smoothly by eliminating the guess work and minimize the back and forth of trying to get different tiles and finishes that accentuate each other.

Another help is our expert in the process of pairing and color, Ana.  Ana created the concept boards with her incredible sense of color and materials and can use her interior design skills to help you through the process of determining what products will go best with the paint, cabinetry, counters, and floors. And finally samples which are the best way for you to know with greater certainty if what you see in your design vision is truly a fit.

Great interior design knocks your socks off and is worth every penny of investment you put in it. So take your time, choose wisely and take advantage of knowledgeable resources to help make your time and the effort more than worth it.

Urban Loft Kitchen Design

People are always curious about how to match up our unique products.  So we created a ton of really amazing concept boards to feature the tiles and how they work together.

One of the favorites is Urban Loft.  To create the look we combined the 100% recycled Stainless Steel 1×2 with Ocean Grey 3×6 from the Spa Glass Collection, finished with a porcelain tile.

There are plenty of boards available so if you need another look please feel free to email us with the details of what you are looking for and we can find a good option for you.  Otherwise keep checking back with the us for new postings!
